Osteoarthritis

Holistic treatments from experienced professionals

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. Although typically thought of as a geriatric condition, it is also commonly seen in younger dogs as a result of developmental joint issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia. Traditionally osteoarthritis was thought of as degeneration of the cartilage, but as we now know the whole joint structure and system is affected. Osteoarthritis is caused by abnormal forces placed through normal joints, normal forces placed through abnormal joints or a combination of the two.  The most prevalent cause of the development of osteoarthritis is developmental joint disease such as elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia and patella luxation. These joints don’t fit perfectly, resulting in areas of abnormal load.

Another contributing factor towards the development of osteoarthritis is obesity. This results in increased pressure placed through the joints on a daily basis.

Injuries and infections such as cranial cruciate ligament injuries and septic or immune mediated polyarthritis, will also cause damage to the joint, inevitably leading to osteoarthritis.

Common signs of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis causes chronic pain, however slips and falls can cause acute flare ups of the condition. Some pets will be obviously lame and struggling on a limb/s however, sometimes it can be hard to identify if your dog is in chronic pain as the symptoms may have had a gradual onset. Subtle changes to your pet may indicate that they are in pain, such as a change in posture, change in gait and sleeping more.

Why chose holistic?

Conventional treatments are often only able to reduce inflammation and pain,  masking the symptoms, instead of providing long term results. Holistic treatment is a full body healing modality, tailored to your pets needs and individual case. Herbal medicine and acupuncture are very safe, whereas many pain relieving pharmaceuticals will reduce the blood flow to the kidney / liver, which, with chronic use, can cause problems with these organs. Herbs and acupuncture have little to no side effects, providing treatment for your pets disease, whilst also protecting from the side effects of pharmaceuticals.

How can physiotherapy help my pet with osteoarthritis?

Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured there are ways to prevent and help manage the condition. Our physiotherapy sessions take a holistic approach to treating your pet. We assess your pets movement, identifying gait and postural abnormalities. There is a thorough muscular and joint assessment to locate areas of weakness, pain and compensation. Just because your pet has only been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one joint it doesn’t mean that they aren’t struggling somewhere else in their body.

We use a range of physiotherapy techniques, laser, shockwave and TENS. Which can be used to, amongst many other things, reduce pain and muscular restrictions. A personalised exercise plan can be created, tailored to your pets specific needs and other issues. Alongside home management advice to help your pet on a day to day basis improve their comfort and reduce the risk of injury and flare ups.

My beautiful cat Chester spent a week in our local vets having being diagnosed with a tumour on his liver and only narrowly surviving an internal bleed. Although they did an amazing job upon discharge we were advised that his prognosis was very poor and we wanted to bring him home so that we could spend his remaining time with us. I immediately made an appointment to see Dr Rinnert hoping to make him as comfortable as possible without his poorly liver having to cope with strong medication. Nearly four months down the line under Dr Rinnert’s care Chester is putting on weight and looking healthier than ever. Dr Rinnert never makes you feel rushed, I cannot thank you enough for the care you have given to Chester enabling us to spend more precious time with him.

I've been seeing Dr Rinnert with my young staffy for around 8 months now and I can't recommend him highly enough. He took the time to really listen and understand my concerns about his symptoms and has been kind and empathetic throughout. The acupuncture and herbs have made such a huge difference to his condition and he's a much happier dog generally now.

My Thomas, 13 years old chihuahua, could barely stand up on his back legs due to neurological condition. Thanks to the diagnosis, acupuncture treatment, herbal remedies and laser therapy prescribed and administered by Dr. Rinnert, my Thomas is walking reasonably again and this has given us hope and massively improved his quality of life. If your loved animal is suffering similar condition I would very much recommend contacting the practice for an asessment.

Absolutely 5 stars 🌟 from me ! I contacted Holistic vet care after my 14.5 year old dog with heart disease and arthritis had a bad reaction to pain medication and diuretics , he was not in a good way and I was really struggling to get him right , it was an extremely stressful time and i was starting to think I was running out of options for my boy , a friend recommended Rinnert and I was keen to try the holistic route ....how glad am I that i did ! I can honestly say it's been a game changer for him. At the first session we had a very thorough conversation about Bazzil’s condition , followed by Rinnert setting to work on tailoring the acupuncture treatment for his speciific problems , he explained Bazzils issues from a Chinese medicine point of view and at last everything made sense to me , the deficiencies and imbalances present , reasons why he was having the reactions to the meds etc . After that first session I could see a difference in how Bazzil was feeling / moving and this continued to improve with follow ups and , along with his herbs prescribed he is doing so well , his health is very stable, so much better than i thought could be achieved and I can't thank Rinnert enough for helping us ... he has such a calming energy that it isn't just Bazzil who benefits...I was a ball of stress on the first visit , but walked out feeling like I'd had a treatment too !! Also, if you are concerned because your pet gets stressed in a vetinary environment as I was , don't be , Bazzil is happy to walk into the the practice ( I have to carry him into the vets completely stressed) and is always so pleased to be there ....and see Rinnert ( and the liver paste 😉) Bazzil is now on maintenance sessions , his herbs and I combine this with laser treatments . I have followed all of Rinnerts advice on Bazzils diet also ...huge difference all round 🙂 Thoroughly recommended!

Our 18 year old cat was really starting to struggle with arthritis in his hips. The help and support we have had from the team at Holistic Vets has been amazing. Louie is now enjoying life so much more. The tailored approach means that his treatment is individual to him and adjusted in each session. He loves his acupuncture (and often falls asleep on the table during his treatment!), and the laser treatment. His herbs really help to support his overall health in between his appointments too. Throughout his life Louie has been really sensitive to medications so the support of the team at Holistic Vets has meant we’ve been able to keep him drug free and not worry about additional side effects impacting him during these precious older years. Thank you 😀

I came to Holistic Vet Care with my dog Jerry Lee who had chronic osteoarthritis. The acupuncture and Chinese herbs that Rinnert prescribes has changed his life. He still has the condition, but the pain has visibly reduced and it’s like he has been frozen in time, with the condition not progressing as you would expect in a dog of his age. Holistic Vet Care invested in a state of the art laser system to help with pain relief which Jerry participates in and loves! More recently a physiotherapist was employed within the practice who is brilliant. We now have Shockwave therapy for Jerry to complement the laser treatments and acupuncture. Again, Jerry absolutely loves it and falls asleep! It has definitely helped with his condition even more and I’m delighted with the results. I can’t recommend Rinnert and his team enough. Your pet is always put first and you just know you are in good hands. Thank you for Jerry Lee’s wonderful treatments.

We have been coming since November after our dog was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. We opted to not go ahead with chemotherapy due to various reasons, and decided to give the herbal route a try along side steroids. Prognosis was 3-4 months from the Oncologist, and we are coming into our 5th month. We are so happy with her progress. She has so much energy and has still been enjoying life to the full, which was our main priority. We are hoping for many more months and will continue with the herbs.

Our Chinese Crested dog was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 10 months ago. Our regular Vet advised Euthanasia as soon as possible due to her age. However, within two days of her first treatment with Rinnert she was walking without a limp and wanting to play with her toys. She is now having regular acupuncture and herbal treatments and continues to thrive. As a family, words cannot express how grateful we are for this extra time with her. Rinnert has been amazing throughout; I highly recommend him and the treatments he offers.

I contacted Holistic Vet Care just over 18 months ago and I am very glad that I did. My Romanian Crossbreed girl, Star, had suffered from diverse symptoms - lameness in multiple limbs, skin problems, loss of body condition and coat, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. She seemed to have lost the will to live. She had eventually been successfully diagnosed with atypical immune mediated polyarthritis and treated with immunosuppressive therapy by the RVC specialists. This had halted all the worrying symptoms, thank goodness. As this radical treatment drew to a close, I was convinced that there was a problem underlying the obvious manifestations and contacted Holistic Vet Care in a search for a perspective that would make sense of this and hopefully offer healing for Star. Alongside this serious immune system disturbance, Star has suffered from advancing osteoarthritis in her left elbow after two arthroscopies to relieve unilateral elbow dysplasia, the first when she was barely aged 1 year old. Fast forward to 18 months after starting treatment with acupuncture and Chinese medicine herbal therapy alongside the pain relieving drug Amantadine prescribed for her elbow by the RVC : I now have the happy, healthy, playful, mischievous girl, that I adopted aged 4 months, back. Her thick shiny coat, her appetite, her body condition and vitality, all of which had faded, have returned and her elbow issues are barely discernible. I believe that Rinnert's patience and understanding with Star, who has been very fearful in consultations, and the perspective that his understanding of what Chinese medicine has to offer, via acupuncture and herbal medicines, has given her a new lease of life. I can't thank Holistic Vet Care enough and I can wholeheartedly recommend the practice.
