Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses light (photons) to support healing, improve blood circulation, promote tissue health, and reduce pain. At Holistic Vet Care, laser therapy is performed by our fully qualified vets and is used as part of an individualised, holistic treatment plan tailored to your pet’s needs.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss whether laser therapy may be appropriate for your pet.

Laser therapy as part of a holistic approach

At Holistic Vet Care, laser therapy is provided by fully qualified vets who have undertaken additional training in its safe and effective use.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, laser therapy may be used to help encourage healthy circulation in areas of pain or injury. It is often combined with acupuncture, herbal medicine, shockwave and tailored lifestyle and dietary advice as part of a holistic treatment plan. While acupuncture allows for very precise stimulation, laser therapy can be used more broadly to gently support larger areas of tissue.

This integrated approach allows us to address not only local pain or injury, but also wider patterns of imbalance that may be contributing to your pet’s condition. Laser therapy is therefore usually used alongside other treatments, rather than in isolation, unless it has been specifically requested or recommended.

Is laser therapy suitable for my pet?

Laser therapy is a gentle, soothing, non-invasive treatment that does not require sedation, making it a suitable option for many pets. However, as with any therapeutic intervention, there are certain situations where laser therapy may not be appropriate, or where additional caution is required.

Laser therapy may not be advised in the following circumstances:

    • Cancer patients – we avoid using laser therapy near tumours as it may increase circulation, which could potentially stimulate tumour growth.
    • Pregnant animals – there is currently limited research on the effects of laser therapy on developing foetuses, so we avoid using it over the abdomen during pregnancy.
    • Active bleeding or haemorrhage– laser therapy can cause blood vessels to dilate, which may worsen active bleeding.
    • Epileptic patients – certain laser settings may be avoided, as pulsing visible light could potentially trigger a seizure in susceptible animals.

Before recommending laser therapy, our qualified vets will always take the time to assess your pet’s medical history, current condition, and overall wellbeing. This allows us to determine whether laser therapy is appropriate, and how it may be incorporated into your pet’s individual care plan safely and effectively.

If you’re unsure whether laser therapy is right for your pet, we’re always happy to discuss their needs and answer any questions you may have.

What can laser therapy help with?

Laser therapy is often used to help relieve inflammation, ease pain, and improve tissue healing. There is published research supporting its use in a variety of conditions.

Cases where laser therapy may be used include the following. Please be advised that this list is not exhaustive. If your pet’s ailment has not been listed, it is still likely that we can help. Please do not hesitate to reach out!

How much does laser therapy cost?

The cost of laser therapy depends on the length of treatment recommended and whether it is provided alongside other therapies. Treatment time is tailored to the individual, based on their condition and needs.

In addition to your consultation, any required laboratory work, and reporting, laser therapy at Holistic Vet Care is charged as follows:

Laser therapy (when included as part of an appointment):

    • £49.85 for up to 10 minutes
    • £61.49 for up to 15 minutes
    • £72.55 for up to 20 minutes

    Standalone laser therapy sessions:

    • £96.37 for 30 minutes (laser therapy only)
    • £145.66 for 40 minutes (laser therapy combined with shockwave therapy)

We will always discuss recommended treatment duration and associated costs with you in advance. If you have any questions about pricing or would like to discuss which option may be most appropriate for your pet, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

    Claiming insurance

Many pet insurance providers now offer cover for complementary and holistic therapies, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, and laser therapy. However, we recommend checking what is included in your plan as cover varies between policies. Please bear in mind that all consultations, treatments, and herbal prescriptions must be paid for at the time. We will then help you claim back from your insurer.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses light (photons) to help stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. By encouraging the body’s own repair mechanisms, we aim to support comfort, circulation, and tissue health.

The treatment is designed to be safe, comfortable, and stress-free, and does not involve any medications. Many pets find laser therapy relaxing, making it suitable even for those who are sensitive, anxious, or in pain.

    How does laser therapy work?

With laser therapy, light particles (photons) are emitted at specific wavelengths and absorbed by the body’s cells. Once absorbed, the photons help stimulate cell division, energy production, and blood vessel growth. Whilst also helping to modulate inflammatory signals and nerve sensitivity.

By encouraging these processes, laser therapy may help reduce inflammation and discomfort, while supporting tissue healing over time. Treatment is tailored to your pet, considering their condition, level of comfort, and overall well-being.

Can I claim through my insurance?

Most insurance companies will cover/contribute towards our services. However, we always advise checking with your insurance company regarding your individual policy.

Do I need a referral from my vets?

If you get in touch with us, we are more than happy to contact your primary vets to organise consent for treatment, if needed.

I took my 19 year old cat to Rinnert, who is treating her for IBD at the moment, as always I found the session very helpful and professional.

The hour-long trip was well worth it. Both the diagnosis and the treatment were explained simply and clearly, and Simba was handled with such love and care that his stress level dropped noticeably. When sensitive areas were touched, he didn't lash out with the aggression he'd shown other regular vets. He even stayed quiet the whole way home. I don't know what you did to him, Catherine, but driving him back was a breeze. Thanks a million to Holistic Vet Care.

I have found the service to be incredibly caring and compassionate. From Alison on reception to seeing Dr Rinnet. There is a very calming influence and our initial appointment didn't feel rushed. Dr Rinnet took time to listen and understand the complex history of my dog. He showed good knowledge and advice upon suspected diagnosis. It was very interesting to see disease from an alternative perspective (TVCM), which so much of it made sense given my dogs symptoms. Reassurance was provided that help could be given to treat my dog. I am not naive to think that all dogs can be "fixed" but for once I am truly hopeful. Living with and managing a dog with multiple allergies/intolerances to both food and the environment is challenging. But I feel hopeful that a combination of chinese herbs with acupuncture could finally work, particularly as my dog is unable to tolerate traditional western medication. I love that Dr Rinnet tries hard to fix the root cause, rather than mask symptoms. Its early days, but fingers crossed there may actually be light at the end of the tunnel. My advise would be if you are sceptical or unsure, just do it, you have nothing to lose, it may just be what your animal needs.

I have been visiting Holistic Vet Care and Rinnert for many years now with numerous cats and dogs. Cases have involved brain tumours, cardiomyopathy, vestibular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, arthritis and many more. Whilst we are lucky enough to have animals within our family I envisage continuing to visit Rinnert. There is always a palpable difference in the quality of life after the animals visit Rinnert. Rinnert has a tremendous knowledge and his kindness, empathy and total commitment to the animals is quite unique. We will always be forever in his debt. I cannot recommend Holistic Vet Care highly enough. THANK YOU I!!!

I wholeheartedly recommend Holistic Vet Care. Thanks to their individual approach, acupuncture, and carefully selected herbal treatment, my dog Otis got back on his feet and is now living a normal, happy life again. The care, professionalism, and genuine compassion shown throughout his treatment have been exceptional. It's wonderful to find a place that truly looks at the whole animal, not just the symptoms. Thank you so much for everything!

As Otis my cockapoo needs long term care with his spine, we see Rinnert on a regular basis for acupuncture. It makes a huge difference to Otis's mobility and he is able to live his life to the full without any stiffness. Rinnert is also very good at checking the overall health of Otis and picks up things straight away if he is suffering with any other ailments. I would highly recommend Rinnert to those that are looking for more holistic practices.

My boy Dylan is an 11 yr old labrador that has had elbow dysphsia since the age of 2. He has had different operations and medication since then but I positively believe more in holistic therapies than drugs. He has been 3 times now for acupuncture and associated herbs and is responding positively and seems much happier in himself. I would really recommend Holistic Vet Care rather than drugs that mask pain which don't get to the source of the problem. HVC really care about the quality of life of my Dylan.
