Food Therapy

Food plays a vital role in health, healing, and overall wellbeing. At Holistic Vet Care, food therapy is used by our fully qualified vets as a gentle, supportive approach to help meet your pet’s individual needs and support the body as a whole.

Every animal is unique, and their nutritional requirements can change throughout life. Food therapy focuses on choosing and adapting diets in a way that supports digestion, metabolism, immune health, and long-term wellbeing.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss whether food therapy may be appropriate for your pet.

Food therapy as part of a holistic approach

Food therapy at Holistic Vet Care is most often used as part of a wider, individualised treatment plan with the aim to support the body gently, safely, and sustainably.

Our fully qualified vets assess your pet’s current health, any diagnosed conditions, and lifestyle before making dietary recommendations — often in combination with Chinese herbal medicine, and acupuncture.

We always encourage collaboration with your primary veterinary surgeon, particularly where medical conditions are present.

    Why consider food therapy?

Many commercial pet foods are highly processed and exposed to high temperatures during production. This can reduce the availability of certain nutrients and, for some animals, make digestion more challenging. Over time, this may contribute to digestive upset, nutrient imbalances, or changes in overall vitality.

Some regular pet foods contain higher levels of carbohydrates due to grain content. Whereas natural and minimally processed diets can be easier for some animals to digest and may provide nutrients in a more bioavailable form.

Slower absorption of proteins and carbohydrates can help prevent glucose spikes and subsequent insulin resistance. This may be particularly important for pets prone to weight issues, diabetes, or recurrent infections (fungi thrive in high glucose environments).

Food therapy is not about a single “perfect” diet, but about finding what works best for your pet.

What diet is most suitable for my pet?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. The most suitable diet depends on many factors, including age, medical history, activity levels, and digestive function.

For example, some older dogs do very well on gently cooked diets containing meat, vegetables, and carbohydrates such as rice. These diets can be easier to digest, require less energy from the body to process, and may reduce the risk of food-borne pathogens.

Other animals may thrive on a carefully balanced raw or minimally processed diet, which can help ensure they receive a wide range of nutrients. What works well at one stage of life may not be appropriate later, and dietary needs often evolve over time.

Specific guidance can be discussed in detail with one of our qualified vets during your consultation.

    Transitioning to a new diet

Any dietary changes should be made gradually to allow the digestive system time to adapt. This usually involves slowly increasing the proportion of the new food over several days while reducing the old food, as introducing changes too quickly can lead to digestive upset. For instance, start with one-quarter of the new food and three-quarters of the old food on the first day, then half of the new food and half of the old food the second day, and so on.

Before making any significant dietary changes, it’s important to seek advice from your vet, as certain conditions may require specific nutritional management.

    Claiming insurance

Many pet insurance providers now offer cover for complementary and holistic therapies, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, and laser therapy. However, we recommend checking what is included in your plan as cover varies between policies. Please bear in mind that all consultations, treatments, and herbal prescriptions must be paid for at the time. We will then help you claim back from your insurer.

    Frequently asked questions

Is food therapy safe for all pets?

Food therapy can be helpful for many pets, but it isn’t appropriate for every animal or every condition. Some pets have medical needs that require specific diets. We always recommend discussing any dietary changes with your primary veterinary surgeon before making adjustments.

Does food therapy mean feeding a raw diet?

Not necessarily. Food therapy is about finding the most suitable diet for your individual pet. Some animals thrive on raw or minimally processed diets, while others do better on gently cooked food. There is no single “correct” approach — the best diet is the one that supports your pet’s health and wellbeing.

Can food therapy help with ongoing health issues?

In some cases, tailored nutrition may help support pets with digestive problems, skin issues, metabolic concerns, or reduced vitality. Food therapy is not a replacement for veterinary treatment but can be used alongside conventional care to support overall health.

My pet is older — is food therapy still appropriate?

Yes, food therapy can be especially valuable for older animals. As pets age, their digestive capacity and nutritional needs often change. Gently cooked, easily digestible diets may be recommended to support comfort and wellbeing in later life.

How quickly will I see changes?

Some pets show improvements in energy, digestion, or coat quality within a few weeks, while others take longer. Changes are often gradual, and responses vary depending on the individual and the underlying issue.

Will changing my pet’s diet cause digestive upset?

Digestive upset can occur if dietary changes are made too quickly. This is why we recommend introducing new foods gradually over several days, allowing the digestive system time to adjust.

Do I need to stop my pet’s current medication or supplements?

No. Food therapy does not require stopping prescribed medications or supplements unless advised by your veterinary surgeon. It is intended to work alongside conventional treatment, not replace it.

Can you work with my own vet?

Absolutely. We actively encourage collaboration with your primary vet to ensure your pet receives safe, well-rounded care.

I took my 19 year old cat to Rinnert, who is treating her for IBD at the moment, as always I found the session very helpful and professional.

The hour-long trip was well worth it. Both the diagnosis and the treatment were explained simply and clearly, and Simba was handled with such love and care that his stress level dropped noticeably. When sensitive areas were touched, he didn't lash out with the aggression he'd shown other regular vets. He even stayed quiet the whole way home. I don't know what you did to him, Catherine, but driving him back was a breeze. Thanks a million to Holistic Vet Care.

I have found the service to be incredibly caring and compassionate. From Alison on reception to seeing Dr Rinnet. There is a very calming influence and our initial appointment didn't feel rushed. Dr Rinnet took time to listen and understand the complex history of my dog. He showed good knowledge and advice upon suspected diagnosis. It was very interesting to see disease from an alternative perspective (TVCM), which so much of it made sense given my dogs symptoms. Reassurance was provided that help could be given to treat my dog. I am not naive to think that all dogs can be "fixed" but for once I am truly hopeful. Living with and managing a dog with multiple allergies/intolerances to both food and the environment is challenging. But I feel hopeful that a combination of chinese herbs with acupuncture could finally work, particularly as my dog is unable to tolerate traditional western medication. I love that Dr Rinnet tries hard to fix the root cause, rather than mask symptoms. Its early days, but fingers crossed there may actually be light at the end of the tunnel. My advise would be if you are sceptical or unsure, just do it, you have nothing to lose, it may just be what your animal needs.

I have been visiting Holistic Vet Care and Rinnert for many years now with numerous cats and dogs. Cases have involved brain tumours, cardiomyopathy, vestibular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, arthritis and many more. Whilst we are lucky enough to have animals within our family I envisage continuing to visit Rinnert. There is always a palpable difference in the quality of life after the animals visit Rinnert. Rinnert has a tremendous knowledge and his kindness, empathy and total commitment to the animals is quite unique. We will always be forever in his debt. I cannot recommend Holistic Vet Care highly enough. THANK YOU I!!!

I wholeheartedly recommend Holistic Vet Care. Thanks to their individual approach, acupuncture, and carefully selected herbal treatment, my dog Otis got back on his feet and is now living a normal, happy life again. The care, professionalism, and genuine compassion shown throughout his treatment have been exceptional. It's wonderful to find a place that truly looks at the whole animal, not just the symptoms. Thank you so much for everything!

As Otis my cockapoo needs long term care with his spine, we see Rinnert on a regular basis for acupuncture. It makes a huge difference to Otis's mobility and he is able to live his life to the full without any stiffness. Rinnert is also very good at checking the overall health of Otis and picks up things straight away if he is suffering with any other ailments. I would highly recommend Rinnert to those that are looking for more holistic practices.

My boy Dylan is an 11 yr old labrador that has had elbow dysphsia since the age of 2. He has had different operations and medication since then but I positively believe more in holistic therapies than drugs. He has been 3 times now for acupuncture and associated herbs and is responding positively and seems much happier in himself. I would really recommend Holistic Vet Care rather than drugs that mask pain which don't get to the source of the problem. HVC really care about the quality of life of my Dylan.
