What is megaoesophagus?
The oesophagus is the tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. Megaoesophagus is when the oesophagus becomes too dilated (widened) to work properly. There are many potential causes for this, such as: congenital abnormalities, physical obstructions, generalised muscle weakness, hormonal deficiencies, neurological issues etc. In many cases, the cause may be unknown.
Holistic treatment
Please be advised that conventional treatment is provided by your regular veterinarian, as we do not offer surgical or conventional medical interventions at Holistic Vet Care.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be a valuable part of supporting the health and recovery of pets with megaoesophagus, alongside their conventional treatment plans.
With acupuncture and carefully selected Chinese herbal medicine, we aim to support pets with megaoesophagus in the following ways:
- Support oesophageal comfort and co-ordination.
- Support appropriate nerve signalling to the oesophagus.
- Help relax spasms in the oesophagus.
- Support healthy blood circulation to the oesophagus.
- Help reduce pain and inflammation.
- Help reduce acid reflux.
Through these approaches, our qualified vets aim to help improve the movement of food through the oesophagus while reducing discomfort associated with eating.
Food therapy
Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, food therapy is foundational in addressing underlying “patterns of disharmony” (the way disease presents within the individual). We aim to support the body’s natural balance with tailored whole-food diets, rather than heavily processed pet foods which may contribute to inflammation in some pets.
For megaoesophagus, we typically focus on providing nutrient-dense, easily digestible wholefoods that are gentle on the digestive system while providing enough energy to maintain body weight. We may recommend diets higher in carbohydrates to supply readily available energy, and lower in fat and protein to help reduce stomach acid and reflux. Meals should be offered in small, frequent portions and always with gravity assistance (such as a raised bowl or doggy highchair), to help food reach the stomach more safely.
Every pet is unique, however, and our goal is to tailor dietary recommendations to your pet’s individual TCM diagnosis, stage of disease, and overall constitution. Specific guidance can be discussed with one of our qualified vets during your consultation.
Claiming insurance
Many pet insurance providers now offer cover for complementary and holistic therapies, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, and laser therapy. However, we recommend checking what is included in your plan as cover varies between policies. Please bear in mind that all consultations, treatments, and herbal prescriptions must be paid for at the time. We will then help you claim back from your insurer.
Frequently asked questions
What are common clinical signs of megaoesophagus?
Pets with megaoesophagus often show a combination of the following signs:
- Regurgitation – bringing up food material a few hours after eating, without any effort (unlike vomiting).
- Breathing issues – there is a risk of food entering the airway with regurgitation and can cause a lung infection known as “aspiration pneumonia”. Signs to look for here are coughing, rapid breathing, and breathing distress.
- Acid reflux – stomach acid travelling up into the oesophagus can cause inflammation (“oesophagitis”), which often causes pain and discomfort when swallowing. Chronic acid reflux causes scarring of the oesophagus, which makes the muscles stiffer and weaker – creating a vicious cycle.
- Inappetence and weight loss – the discomfort associated with eating often causes pets to be reluctant to eat. This, on top of regurgitating food material, contributes to weight loss.
How is megaoesophagus typically treated by conventional vets?
Please be advised that conventional treatment is provided by your regular vet, as we do not offer surgical or medical interventions at Holistic Vet Care.
Conventional treatment for megaoesophagus focuses on managing symptoms and reducing complications, rather than curing the condition itself. The main goals of treatment are to help food reach the stomach safely, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of serious problems.
Your vet may prescribe medications to help reduce nausea and acid reflux. These can ease oesophageal inflammation and improve comfort, but they do not restore normal movement of the oesophagus.
Long-term management relies heavily on feeding techniques that use gravity to help food reach the stomach. These strategies are typically lifelong, and may include:
- Feeding from raised bowls
- Keeping your pet upright for 10–20 minutes after meals
- Using a Bailey chair (sometimes called a “doggy highchair”) to safely support an upright feeding position
Additional treatments may be needed depending on the cause of the condition or any complications that arise. For example, surgery may be required if there is a physical blockage affecting the oesophagus, or antibiotics may be used if food enters the lungs.
In more severe cases, where eating by mouth becomes difficult or unsafe, a feeding tube may be recommended. This allows food to bypass the oesophagus and helps maintain proper nutrition and hydration.
Must I leave my current vets to seek treatment at Holistic Vet Care?
No – we work alongside your conventional vet. We don’t replace conventional or emergency treatment. Our aim is to support your pet’s whole body and to help you feel informed, supported, and confident in their care.
Many complementary therapies are used alongside conventional treatments to improve patient welfare and can help improve prognosis. While adverse herbal-drug interactions (HDIs) can occur, they are uncommon when therapies are prescribed appropriately and monitored carefully.
When interactions do occur, the most common scenario is the herb enhancing the effect of the drug – which may allow conventional treatment plans to be adjusted by the prescribing vet.
We always encourage open communication between you, your primary vet, and our team to ensure your pet receives safe, balanced, and well-coordinated care.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss whether holistic support may be appropriate for your pet.
Can I fully replace conventional treatment with holistic treatment?
No, holistic treatment should not replace conventional diagnosis or medical care.
At Holistic Vet Care, we work alongside your regular veterinarian. Conventional treatment is essential for diagnosing the condition, assessing severity, and managing emergencies or complications. Our role is to support your pet’s comfort, overall health, resilience, healing, and long-term wellbeing.
We always encourage open communication between you, your primary vet, and our team to ensure your pet receives safe, balanced, and well-coordinated care.
Do I need a referral from my vets?
Yes – your primary vet signs the “Vet Care Agreement” and sends your pet’s history to us. This ensures your pet receives safe, coordinated care before your first appointment.
How Long Does Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Take to Show Results?
The rate and degree of improvement depend on your pet and the severity of disease. Some animals show marked improvement in a matter of weeks, whilst others may need months. With TCM, improvement is steady and sustained, so patience is required.
Are There Any Risks with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
TCM is generally safe when prescribed by a qualified person. Certain herbs may have side-effects and may have the ability to interact with conventional medications. Therefore, it is imperative that TCM is only used under professional guidance.
Will acupuncture hurt my pet?
It is unlikely. We find that most patients tolerate acupuncture very well, many end up falling asleep! Some points can be painful on some patients, but we take steps to minimise discomfort in these cases.
Can holistic treatments help older pets?
Absolutely! We see many geriatric patients, and they often demonstrate notable improvements (it may require several treatments before the benefits can be obviously appreciated). Some clients report that their older animals appear brighter, more comfortable, or more engaged again.
How do I know which holistic treatments are suitable for my pet?
Talk to your vet before trialling any new treatments.
Once registered with us, you can also ask our holistic vet.
Can I claim through my insurance?
Most insurance companies will cover/contribute towards our services. However, we always advise checking with your insurance company regarding your individual policy.

Kind words from our clients
EXCELLENT Based on 111 reviews Posted on Google Karen PowellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have found the service to be incredibly caring and compassionate. From Alison on reception to seeing Dr Rinnet. There is a very calming influence and our initial appointment didn't feel rushed. Dr Rinnet took time to listen and understand the complex history of my dog. He showed good knowledge and advice upon suspected diagnosis. It was very interesting to see disease from an alternative perspective (TVCM), which so much of it made sense given my dogs symptoms. Reassurance was provided that help could be given to treat my dog. I am not naive to think that all dogs can be "fixed" but for once I am truly hopeful. Living with and managing a dog with multiple allergies/intolerances to both food and the environment is challenging. But I feel hopeful that a combination of chinese herbs with acupuncture could finally work, particularly as my dog is unable to tolerate traditional western medication. I love that Dr Rinnet tries hard to fix the root cause, rather than mask symptoms. Its early days, but fingers crossed there may actually be light at the end of the tunnel. My advise would be if you are sceptical or unsure, just do it, you have nothing to lose, it may just be what your animal needs.Posted on Google chris ladTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been visiting Holistic Vet Care and Rinnert for many years now with numerous cats and dogs. Cases have involved brain tumours, cardiomyopathy, vestibular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, arthritis and many more. Whilst we are lucky enough to have animals within our family I envisage continuing to visit Rinnert. There is always a palpable difference in the quality of life after the animals visit Rinnert. Rinnert has a tremendous knowledge and his kindness, empathy and total commitment to the animals is quite unique. We will always be forever in his debt. I cannot recommend Holistic Vet Care highly enough. THANK YOU I!!!Posted on Google Carl KellyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I wholeheartedly recommend Holistic Vet Care. Thanks to their individual approach, acupuncture, and carefully selected herbal treatment, my dog Otis got back on his feet and is now living a normal, happy life again. The care, professionalism, and genuine compassion shown throughout his treatment have been exceptional. It's wonderful to find a place that truly looks at the whole animal, not just the symptoms. Thank you so much for everything!Posted on Google Sohnia FreemanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. As Otis my cockapoo needs long term care with his spine, we see Rinnert on a regular basis for acupuncture. It makes a huge difference to Otis's mobility and he is able to live his life to the full without any stiffness. Rinnert is also very good at checking the overall health of Otis and picks up things straight away if he is suffering with any other ailments. I would highly recommend Rinnert to those that are looking for more holistic practices.Posted on Google Susannah JordanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My boy Dylan is an 11 yr old labrador that has had elbow dysphsia since the age of 2. He has had different operations and medication since then but I positively believe more in holistic therapies than drugs. He has been 3 times now for acupuncture and associated herbs and is responding positively and seems much happier in himself. I would really recommend Holistic Vet Care rather than drugs that mask pain which don't get to the source of the problem. HVC really care about the quality of life of my Dylan.Posted on Google Charlotte BuckTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My dog Tilly loves going to see Rinnert at Holistic vet care, and falls asleep during her acupuncture which relieves her of her muscle spasms and stiffness...The staff are all so friendly and very accommodating, I couldn't ask for more..☺️Posted on Google Tracy StewartTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My usually terrified chihuahua was completely relaxed and along with the longer appointment and personal care I believe that we are on the road to recovery. I highly recommend Holistic Vets for the calm and personal attention taken to find out what is happening with my little Nala’s health.Posted on Google Maria Jane KendallTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
